Science

Our exciting and innovative science department aims to develop an enthusiasm and passion for science in the students we teach. High-quality teaching is supported by interesting practical activities in which students are shown real-world examples and applications of the science they learn.

Each year we organise educational visits to broaden the students’ experience. Examples include trips to the National Space centre; lectures and activities at local universities and places of interest and an A level Physics trip to CERN in Geneva. In school we run a Science Club for years 7 and 8 and a STEM club for older students in which they can combine approaches to problem solving from science, maths and engineering.

Science Day every year brings pupils from local junior schools to the school where they take part in several activities including forensic science, applied chemistry, and a look at the physics of liquid nitrogen. Throughout the day they work with staff, older students and delegates from Nottingham and Lincoln universities.

Science is taught in 8 laboratories as well as a dedicated Science ICT base with 30 PCs. In addition, the majority of our Sixth Form lessons take place in the Newton Centre, a state of the art Sixth Form teaching facility which includes four modern laboratories, a research centre, a lecture theatre and a planetarium.

At GCSE, all students take Science and Additional Science or the three separate sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Sciences are popular post 16 with around 80 students studying each of the three sciences at AS level and around 60 taking these on to A2. We also offer a very well-subscribed BTEC in Medical Science aimed at those students who, whilst not aspiring doctors, nevertheless wish to pursue careers in the healthcare sector.
