Law

We study the English Legal System, Sources of Law and Criminal Law.  The Department competes in Mock Trial competitions and has twice won the final of the Sheffield Law Society competition with our team acting as a prosecution team in front of a real High Court Judge.  The department also makes a visit to courts to watch real trials. Heard the one about the nurse who was so drunk she thought her baby was a log and put it on the fire?  After studying Law you will have. In Year 12, A-level Law aims to teach students the basic elements of the English Legal System.  This includes understanding the different types of court available, the different types of judge that sit in them and the types of cases that get heard there.  You will also study the powers that the police have in arresting and detaining criminals as well as the roles of solicitors and barristers in representing them.  You will also look at the sources of English Law and the role of judges in creating new laws.

In Year 13 you will gain a comprehensive knowledge of the Criminal Law of England.  This entails studying in some depth the law surrounding the offences of Murder, Manslaughter, Theft, Robbery, Burglary and Criminal Damage.  This is complemented with a look at the defences that may be raised against these crimes, such as insanity, intoxication and consent.

Law is a very popular choice at A-level with nearly 50 students opting for it in Year 12.  It is an examination based course that provides a real insight into the world of law and a great foundation from which to go on and study the subject in more depth at University.
