English Language and Literature

Type of Course: AS and A2

Course Description

The English Language and Literature qualification, at AS or A2, opens doors to an exciting variety of academic and professional careers in Britain and abroad.

You may decide, on successful completion of your course, to continue your study of English at university. Although this course is not necessarily a direct route to a    traditional literature degree, many universities now offer combined Lang/Lit        degrees. Alternatively, Language and Literature supports almost any degree course and is a most valuable qualification for many other disciplines.

If you decide on employment at 18, your English A Level can be the gateway to careers in administration, management and education, in journalism, nursing, social work and many others.

English Language and Literature gives you the opportunity to continue studying both Language and Literature in equal measure, at the same time combining the two sections to produce an alternative approach to a variety of texts.

You will be able to enjoy an interesting variety of poetry, prose and drama texts. You will also study non-fiction texts. This course allows you to develop your skills of analysis and appreciation of the English language in many different forms, with the study of spoken language taking a prominent place.

You will learn how to write for particular audiences and purposes, as well as submitting some interesting creative writing. The AS year offers the unique opportunity to write your own short story after carefully studying a range of stories. Short story writing and analysis is the AS coursework and is 1/2 of the assessment.

You will study 2 units, one of which is assessed through a written examination and the other through coursework.

Here is a general outline of what the work entails.

Unit 1— Exploring Voices in Speech and Writing (60% of total examination)

Unit 2—   Creating Texts (40% of total coursework)

English A Level can be the gateway to careers in administration, management and education, in journalism, nursing, social work and many others.
