Drill Hall show students spread the word in radio interview

Performing Arts students have been spreading the word for the Academy's next big theatre production in an interview on BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

Rosemary Turner, Sophie Foster and Bethany Foster told Nicola Gilroy's afternoon show all about the upcoming performance of The Wardrobe by award-winning playwright Sam Holcroft.

Forty students are preparing to take centre stage at Lincoln Drill Hall on Tuesday 4th February 2014.

Rehearsals for the cast are gathering pace as they put the finishing touches to 12 scenes set in 12 different time periods spread across more than 500 years - all shared and witnessed by the same Tudor wardrobe.

The play is being performed as part of the National Theatre's Connections project, which says: "Across five centuries of British history, small groups of children seek sanctuary in the same solid, old wardrobe. It's the safest place they know – but is it safe enough?"'

Drill Hall tickets are available to book online or by calling the box office on 01522 873894.

The Drill Hall production is not the end of the run. In April, the students take The Wardrobe to one of the most famous theatres in the country - The Crucible in Sheffield.

Two Sixth Form Performing Arts students - Rosemary Turner and Candy Mattingley - are co-directing the play with Mrs Bramwell-Smith, the Academy's Head of Performace. Some backstage elements are also designed and produced by Year 12 students to fulfill criteria for their AS course: props, costume, lighting and sound.

Published below are entries from the students' rehearsals diary.

During today's rehearsal, I saw all of the groups perform their scenes. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of the scenes and the effort that the students are tirelessly putting in. Alex and Lucy performed their scene to professional standards and blew me away with their ability to perform so closely and comfortably with one another.

Tonight’s rehearsal went very well. Scene three has been working on creating tension and a firm understanding of their characters; they have made significant progress over the last few weeks and are feeling proud of their hard work.

Tonight’s rehearsal went very well - the groups have worked well independently and with myself. It is clear that they all feel very comfortable within their characters and they are confident in what they are doing.
