Remembrance Day Service

On the morning of the 11th November 2013, all Year 7 and Year 8 students  in the Academy gathered to commemorate Armistice Day and to participate in the Service of Remembrance.

The Service was led by the Reverend George Goalby proudly supported by the Army Cadet Force, the Priory City of Lincoln Detachment; who presented their banners at the occasion.

Mrs M Smith, former English teacher and Senior Leader at the Academy both wrote and read a poem  ‘Death in Surburbia’ which linked the act of remembrance succinctly with the events of the current day, outlining the horrific death of Fusilier Lee Rigby on the streets of Woolwich, South East London.  Joshua Haywood, Simon Hicks and Alice Rylatt, Head Girl, shared the second reading – the speech given by 14 year old Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Malala Yousafzai to the United Nations on 12th July 2013.

A poignant moment in the service was the presentation of the mace belonging to Captain Roberts, a former pupil of the school, who died during the Normandy Landings 6th June 1944 and its provenance was ably clarified by Mr Galbraith.

The two minutes silence was respected by all year groups across the Academy, the start of which was signalled by the Last Post, sounded by Bugler Staff Sergeant Mike Lewis of the Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force Band.  Billy Hart, Head boy, Rosie Turner and Ashley Diack then led the prayers.

‘I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above’ was the hymn chosen by Mr Newton, who accompanied the students on the piano.  They had a second opportunity to demonstrate their singing prowess with a closing rendition of the first verse of The National Anthem.

Thanks go to Major M Ginty and his Army Cadet Force, represented in the service by

Staff Sergeant James Vickers, Staff Sergeant Sophie Vickers, Corporal Mathew Johnson, Corporal Nicole Vickers, Corporal Brandon Sewell, Lance Corporal Jack Goodhand, Lance Corporal Joshua Davison, Cadet James Loveday, Cadet Zara Wring, Cadet Nathanael Wood, Cadet Jordan Lowe and Cadet Alice turner without all of  whom the impressive ceremonial aspect would not have been possible.
