Singlish - Cultures Combined

On Friday 15th June 2012, 24 students and 3 members of staff, from Anderson Secondary School in Singapore, arrived at the Academy to spend the day getting to know more about how learning and teaching is practised in an English school.

The visit was part of an itinerary that included visits to cities such as London, Oxford and York.  The Priory City of Lincoln Academy was the only school on their busy schedule.

Prior to their arrival, 24 of our Year 10 students were paired up with their counterparts from Anderson Secondary and, thanks to the e-buddy system, were able to find out about each other before they would meet.

Despite initial shyness and nerves at the thought of seeing their e-buddy face to face, the students from both schools were soon deep in conversation. The day was spent with the Andersonians involved in activities with their partner:  English and Science lessons; an energetic game of Rounders, which was the first experience of the game for many of the visitors; and finally a delicious English afternoon tea, including scones, strawberries and cream, provided by the Academy catering staff.

By the end of the activities, all students and staff had experienced a thoroughly enjoyable day and were reluctant to say goodbye to new found friends.

One Singapore teacher, Hairol Mohammed, described the visit as a “lovely time” and he was hopeful this would be a “yearly event between both schools.”

This experience will also help with the Academy’s bid to achieve Full International Award Status from the Intermediate status we currently hold.
